China’s national U5MR24 has declined by 85.1 per cent, from 61 per thousand live births in 1991 to 9.1 per thousand live births in 2017, with an average annual reduction of 7.1 per cent. During this period, the U5MRdropped by 77.0 per cent in urban areas and by 84.7 per cent in rural areas. In 1991, U5MRin rural areas was 3.4 times that of urban areas. By 2017, this ratio had decreased to 2.3 times, though still revealing a significant urban-rural gap.
