Since 1991, there has been a significant decline in the IMR.25 Nationally, the IMR dropped 86.5 per cent from 50.2 per thousand live births in 1991 to 6.8 per thousand live births in 2017. Between 1991 and 2017, the IMR dropped by 76.3 per cent in urban areas and 86.4 per cent in rural areas. Again, significant disparities remain, as the IMR in rural areas in 2017 was 1.9 times that of urban areas.
