UNICEF launches its new breastfeeding room for staff called “10m2 of Love”

Beijing, 14 May 2013 – UNICEF China today launched its improved and expanded breastfeeding room in support of mothers on staff who have returned to work following childbirth. Called “10m2 of Love” as part of a soon-to-be-launched campaign to promote public and employee breastfeeding rooms, UNICEF's new space is equipped with comfortable chairs, electricity sockets, a refrigerator, a wash basin and lots of toys. 

“The aim is to make more time and space available for families to fully support exclusive breastfeeding for six months followed by breastfeeding with complimentary foods for up to two years,” said Dan Toole, UNICEF Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific, who was on hand to launch the room in a small ceremony.

In partnership with government and private sector partners, UNICEF China is now preparing to launch the “10m2 of Love” campaign nationwide on 30 May 2013. The aim is to locate, register, certify and celebrate breastfeeding rooms in public buildings and work places throughout China. The “10m2 of Love” logo will soon appear all over China. 

“It's really convenient for breast feeding mothers at work like me,” said Chen Lele, UNICEF Staff Member whose daughter is 15 months old. “I can either express my milk here or take my baby with me to feed her while I'm working in the office. She enjoys playing here very much. That makes me feel happy and much more committed to my work.”
